This past Monday evening an inexplicable tragedy struck Tampa Bay. Two teenage girls were killed in a car accident in Pasco County. It's every parent's worst fear. Both girls were wearing seat belts according to pollice reports when Alyssa Dyer's car veered into oncoming traffic striking the vehicle driven by Allie Augello. Allie had been travelling home from school practice when the accident occurred. It happened in a split-second yet two families will never be the same.

No alcohol, speeding, or other obvious factors caused the accident. Yet, we can't be too careful when allowing our kids use of the vehicle. I believe it's a good rule of thumb to enforce a no texting, no cell phone use while driving. The price is just too high to pay for another life lost in Tampa Bay. My condolensces to both families.

Odonnell, of Odessa, was driving his 1986 Harley northbound in the outside lane of U.S. Highway 41 behind the 2004 Harley of Chad M. Canady, of Wesley Chapel, when, for unknown reasons, Odonnell struck Canady. Both drivers were thrown off their bikes."

As most motorcycle accidents, the drivers of the motorcycles were seriously injured. One was taken to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition. The rise in motorcycle accidents in Tampa Bay is alarming and is an almost daily occurrence in the Tampa Bay area.

Witnesses had said he was carrying a hammer but it was actually a squeegee.

Once again, the supposedly non-lethal taser is at the center of another death. Amnesty International and other advocacy groups have criticized the safety of the taser weapon and have called on police to discontinue its use until it can be determined whether the taser is actually a lethal weapon even though it's been marketed as a non-lethal alternative to a firearm.

This photo taken by the St. Pete Times shows an unruly Red Sox fan being arrested on top of the Rays dugout during Wednesday night's game at the Trop. Normally, this wouldn't draw my attention save for the fact that the arresting officer has a Taser gun pointed at the back of the man's head. He's already on the ground and another officer appears to have him subdued. So why pull out the Taser? St. Petersburg Police officials are looking into the incident since internal policies prohibit aiming or firing a taser at someone's head or neck.

The Taser gun has come under intense scrutiny for its sometimes lethal effects, in spite of the fact that the gun has been aggressively marketed as an alternative to deadly force.

A 46 year old Plant City man has died after being tasered three times by Hillsborough County deputies. The deputies tasered Roney Wilson 3 times after responding to a call that he was becoming violent and would not leave a residence. When police arrived at the scene of his mother's house, he was in his mother's pickup truck. His 70 year old mother had called for help stating that he needed help and that he suffered from bipolar disorder. Yet, when the police confronted him, he refused to leave the truck. They tasered him three times to get him out of the truck after a brief struggle with him. When they noticed he was unresponsive, he administered CPR, to no avail.

Wilson had been arrested previously for misdemeanor battery and driving with a suspended license. His mother wanted to get him help for his mental issues. She didn't want him to die. The taser was used to subdue a suspect with a history of mental issues, not a a hardened, violent criminal. Once again, taser use results in a needless death. Perhaps, law enforcement should consider an alternative to the taser which is quickly becoming a lethal weapon rather than an alternative to deadly force as it has been promoted.

This is a dangerous trend that will result in many many more accidents that could have been avoided if the driver would have stopped texting and paid attention to the road. Tampa Bay roads are already congested. There are many bad drivers out there. Texting while driving is like playing Russian roulette. Stop texting while driving, it's that simple.

First, a man died in Tampa on I-4 after his motorcycle crashed into the rearend of a tractor trailer. Rafael Colon was killed after being run over by at least two vehicles on the Interstate in Tampa.

Then, Friday night, Algernard Brown, of St. Petersburg was critically injured after his motorcycle crashed at a high rate of speed on 18th St. South in St. Petersburg. Brown was not wearing his helmet and is very seriously injured.

Finally, Monday afternoon Kevin Lund of Frostproof was killed when he struck the right front portion of a Ford F-150 pickup which was turning left at the time of the crash.

All three of the crashes were preventable. Perhaps all motorists, including those driving motorcycles need to remind themselves that one mistake or careless error can cost a life on the roadway.

The Florida Highway Patrol has begun a campaign to address the growing number of motorcyclist fatalities in Florida. The campaign, dubbed "Ride Proud. Dress Loud" seeks to draw attention to what it sees as a major cause of the number of motorcycle accidents-other drivers simply don't see them.

In 2006, the most recent data available, 521 Florida motorcyclists were killed on the road, up from 441 in 2005.

A Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputy narrowly escaped serious injury on Monday during a traffic stop on I-75 in the southbound lane. Sgt. Scott Wellinger of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department had stopped a vehicle traveling southbound on I-75 when the truck driver, Jose Serrano clipped the rear end of the patrol car. The sergeant was sitting in his 2006 Chevrolet Impali in the emergency lane with the emergency lights and strobes activated when a tractor-trailer failed to slow down and move over and drifted off the road. The truck's rear wheels clipped Wellinger's slightly ajar driver's door. The door was crumpled and peeled back into the front wheel well. Serrano claimed he could not move over due to traffic. However, an investigation found that he was travelling 60 mph at the time and failed to slow down which is required by law if the vehicle is not able to move away from the patrol car. Fortunately, the officer was not seriously injured.

The Move Over law was enacted in Florida in 2002 to prevent such accidents and ensure the safety of law enforcement officers who correctly believe they are in grave danger during such traffic stops. The media regularly reports officers being injured in the Tampa Bay area during such traffic stops. There is no doubt that some roadways in the Tampa Bay area such as US 19 in PInellas County are particularly hazardous. That's no excuse for motorists to ignore the move over law.

With the high price of gasoline and a declining housing and job market many residents of Pinellas County are contemplating alternative methods of traveling to their work destinations. Some are considering using the bicycle to get back and forth from work. This may work for some if they have a good bike, proper safety equipment such as bike reflectors, and a helmet. Yet, if this is the chosen method of transportation, a proper understanding of the road and the traffic laws is crucial to remaining safe. Some roads in Pinellas County are just too congested for bike travel. For instance, US 19 is far too congested and poorly constructed for bike traffic. That holds true if you're in Tarpon Springs, Clearwater, or St. Petersburg. Gandy Boulevard in south Pinellas County may work in some areas but is also dangerous and not really designed to accomodate bike traffic. The Pinellas Trail is ideal but doesn't really provide easy access to many job sites. For instance, if one wanted to bike from Seminole or Largo to St. Petersburg, the trail could be used depending on the location of the job site in St. Petersburg. If the job is in the Tyrone area, easy access is not really there.

Another alternative is the mass transit or bus system. However that also has its drawbacks since it's time consuming and doesn't cover all the areas of northern and southern Pinellas County.

It's tough to make alternative transportation plans but it can be done with adequate planning of the route, safety measures, and time.

A Pinellas Park police officer is currently in Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg and is scheduled to have surgery to repair his broken leg. Officer Scott Martin of the Pinellas Park Police Department was directing traffic at 6:00am because of a malfunctioning traffic light in the northbound lanes of US 19 and Gandy Blvd. The officer was wearing a reflective vest at the time of the accident but the driver of the van who hit him, Sengthong Liamsavy, told officers at the scene that he never saw the police officer. According to the driver, it was dark at the time and he didn't see the officer in spite of the reflective vest.

No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing.
